“i kicked myself all the way home
for not saying hello
maybe you’ll see this
and let me take you out
i was reading d. h. lawrence”

This is one of the tender, awkwardly worded Craigslist classified ads collected in Sophie Blackall’s Missed Connections.

Blackall has gathered her favorite “missed connections” and transformed them into beautiful paintings that reveal the longings of people who believe they have, in a few short moments, seen—and lost—the loves of their lives. Their hope is that they will be able to meet their beloved strangers again and live out a fairy tale ending.

What I find so intriguing about Missed Connections is that people actually take the time to reach out to “perfect strangers” in the hope that their lives will change from just a “fleeting glance.” In this book, Blackall has captured the dreamer in all of us.
